Sanctum Prelate made it into the Cube in a very odd patch while the last run of Vintage Cube was live over Brimaz, King of Oreskos, and is one that I wont miss. Tutors are never good. I zap their Young Pyromancer, they zap my Soldier of the Pantheon, I play Phyrexian Revoker to shut down their Jace, Vryn's Prodigy. Avalanche Riders is serviceable. Ill see you in the queues. Memory Deluge is going to be a much bigger deal for formats like Arena Cube, but its a serious card advantage spell that offers a good amount of selection for the price. You dont want to try to draft a good stuff deck where you have a pile of cards that are fine when broken is possible. Im really looking for Goblin Bombardment and some other cheap support before I give that one a close look. Were talking about the sorts of cards that would be easy first picks in the absence of power, and a few cards that are generally considered too good for those environments. Bennie Smith gives in to this awesome urge with Etali, Primal Conqueror, his Commander Deck of the Week. Beyond that, Jaces Ingenuity would make a lot of my blue decks even in Vintage Cube and thats the floor of Mystic Confluence. We play Legion's Landing, swing, play an Ophiomancer, and Strip Mine their Swamp to keep them off tutor mana. In my experience, once you have Yawgmoths Will, if anybody at the table opens Lions Eye Diamond it will come to you, which is the easiest two-card combo for making a lethal Storm turn happen. Ill first-pick a Griselbrand out of some packs, though more commonly my Vampiric Tutors are tracking down Tinker in my mostly blue deck. The fives are mostly interchangeable, though Nissa, Who Shakes the World is probably the best and both Elder Gargaroth and Vivien, Monsters Advocate are two cards that I will actively try not to play given how much worse they are than the other fives. This is arguably the best card in the Cube thanks to its versatility and power level, often providing more value than weaker power pieces like Timetwister or off-color Moxen. While I believe that Bloodbraid Elf is considerably more powerful than Arlinn, the Packs Hope, I also dont really want to play with any of these cards ever. Nissa, Who Shakes the World is the consensus best five-mana planeswalker for Vintage Cube, though Vivien Reid is markedly better than whatever the next best option is. Your email address will not be published. Beyond that, card selection and card draw are very important, and Storm is the one archetype that I regularly draft where I believe you have to take lands highly because you will lose to your manabase otherwise. I could also see Mind Twist, Tolarian Academy, Timetwister, Library of Alexandria, and Strip Mine entering the conversation here as cards that are plainly absurdly above rate and are all excellent at getting more mana worth of effects than your opponent. Pair these two with Giver of Runes or Mother of Runes and you have some of the best early creatures, period. They have Manglehorn for my signet, making me happy I didn't play out my sword. .thumb { What are the different archetypes for vintage cube? : r/MTGO - Reddit Personally I dont see the appeal of Birthing Pod in Vintage Cube, but it does certainly do more for archetype diversity than all of my Mono-Green Ramp darlings that are on the outs. We play a Mother of Runes which gets Force Spiked. I Mind Twist away their remaining four cards. Especially in League. A stack of interaction, an Upheaval, and an Urza, Lord High Artificer are really all you need to actually close a game, and Id prefer the rest of my cards to look like Force of Will rather than half-combos that cant get it done on their own. If it could be said that blue has a weakness in Vintage Cube, it would be that there are probably too many win conditions. Signets are great because theyre mana acceleration, and I more commonly pick off-color Signets to fill out my mana curve than I do for any kind of mana fixing. All of these cards account for huge swings that far exceed the mana invested. 1 Mutavault Realizing they have no recourse for my Sword of Body and Mind, they concede. They play Deceiver Exarch to tap us down. Keep in mind that Underworld Breach was cut from the Cube so you are looking for explicitly Yawgmoths Will. Recurring Nightmare is one of those cards that is too good for most Cube environments while being somewhat overshadowed in powered Cube, but it can still get the job done. For instance, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker or Splinter Twin are both one half of the Izzet ()-based Twin deck (one of the best archetypes). Or at least it can be. We find our Sword of Body and Mind with Stoneforge Mystic but they have endless snakes. They Frantic Search, loot, crack the Memory Jar, play LED, Rakdos Signet, and Grim Tutor for Living Death. Chase Carroll recaps their favorite cards from each Secret Lair in the Spring Superdrop. Cards like Black Lotus can make 4-drops on turn 1 a reality. } Cards like Lightning Bolt can be useful to give control decks an edge against aggressive decks as well. This category is a bit broader, and my list here is by no means exhaustive. Its a phantom Draft, which means it costs less and you keep none of the cards, but it still costs either 10 TIX or 100 Play Points to enter. The Moxen are also great in just about any deck, even if theyre not on-color. As somebody who has had one of my own Cubes run on MTGO, Im here to impart some wisdom on how to best enjoy your Vintage Cube experience and how to best navigate one of the most volatile Limited environments imaginable. A great red aggressive deck in Vintage Cube usually implies the presence of Mox Ruby, Black Lotus, and/or Strip Mine, but the most important thing is that you get a lot of one-drops and a good amount of two-drops. }, Lorcana shows off demo decks, new cards, and more at the GAMA Expo, Dusk Till Dawn introduces Prism, Advent of Thrones as well as new Shadow Runeblade hero. The Ultimate Guide to Cube Archetypes: Blue - ChannelFireball Experience is the best teacher, but Ill do my best to facilitate some good lessons. I swing back for 5 and break their signet with an Anguished Unmaking to keep them off mana. We'll take a punt. In the same vein, I always maindeck Manic Vandal since killing a signet is the same as killing a land. The most important thing in Vintage Cube is getting set up early, so I value these slowlands lower than fastlands, but I would also value all of the cards being cut lower than fastlands. Im actually a bit miffed that Arcane Artisan, a card that I was generally happy to pick early, was cut from the Cube while Show and Tell and Eureka remained in despite their massive downsides. The two most busted Green cards in the whole Vintage Cube are Channel and Natural Order. Whats more important than the list is understanding the common thread. On balance these swaps dont do much to alter the positioning of red decks in the Cube, but Bloodthirsty Adversary offers the most for being a cheap threat that can be a big swingy play when it needs to be. } Entomb into Reanimate is great, and if you are able to load up on great card selection you can make it happen consistently, but cards like Buried Alive and Oonas Prowler are typically too inefficient to be competitive and it generally makes more sense to me to play good creatures that are at least somewhat castable and try to do that in an deck with Signets and other, better forms of fast mana. Ive 3-0ed plenty of Vintage Cubes staying mono-blue, and blue is most commonly my primary color in any two or more color decks. Id also like to direct your attention towards Channel and the many powerful bomb Eldrazi, like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn which dont always get picked. Do what feels fun to you. Ah, Storm, a classic archetype thats as fun as it is difficult to pull off. Theres just too much broken stuff happening to happily register Doom Blade. Looter il-Kor gets the obvious upgrade to Suspicious Stowaway, and Impulse gets the boot it probably should have gotten years ago. When you're drafting the Vintage Cube, my strong advice is to pick your cards with the assumption that you'll be in these colors.
